The Program: Ashen stories are works of fiction. Characters, organizations, dialogue, and events are invented or used fictitiously. References to real places or other real-world material provide context and do not imply affiliation, endorsement, or a factual account of events.

Creative Process

I develop the Ashen stories with the use of generative AI for brainstorming, exploring possibilities, and generating draft prose. The finished stories include AI-generated material, alongside the ideas, direction, writing, and editorial decisions I bring to the work.

Sometimes I approach a scene with a clear understanding of what needs to happen, what a character should feel, and where the story needs to go. In those moments, I provide specific direction, dialogue, descriptions, or emotional context, and work through the resulting drafts.

Often, that begins with me putting a substantial amount of my own writing and thinking into the process. I may supply long paragraphs containing dialogue, exchanges between characters, descriptions, and ideas about what should happen and why. Those passages aren’t always polished or presented in their final order. Sometimes I have the pieces of a scene without having settled on how they should fit together. I use AI to help sort through that material, suggest an order, connect ideas, or expand on an exchange. The resulting draft may retain my wording, reorganize it, or introduce new material for me to consider.

Other times, I know what I want a scene to accomplish but haven’t found the right way to get there. I may ask AI to explore alternatives, suggest an approach, or simply create something for me to consider. Those exchanges sometimes introduce ideas I hadn’t thought of. Some become part of the stories. Others lead me toward a different idea, or show me a direction I don’t want to take.

I read and review every word AI generates for these stories, and I contribute my own writing throughout the process. I decide what fits the characters, what serves the scene, and what belongs in the Ashen world. I ask for rewrites, introduce my own alternatives, build on suggestions, and reject material that takes the work somewhere I don’t want it to go. Revisions may themselves involve further AI-generated writing.

I also use AI for routine editorial review, including checks of spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, word choice, and clarity. I ask it to help identify repetitive phrasing, awkward transitions, inconsistencies in tense or terminology, and passages where an idea may not come across as clearly as I intend. I evaluate those suggestions rather than accepting them automatically, particularly when a change could alter a character’s voice, the rhythm of a passage, or the meaning of a scene.

Not every idea or sentence originates with me, and I don’t want to suggest otherwise. The process moves between my own writing, AI-generated possibilities, and revisions shaped by what I believe the story needs. My role is to develop the stories, guide their direction, and make the decisions about what becomes part of the finished work.

I take responsibility for what I choose to publish, including its strengths, its shortcomings, and any corrections it may need. My hope is that readers will understand how these stories were made while finding something meaningful in the people, choices, and experiences within them.

Please do not send unsolicited manuscripts, story ideas, character proposals, or other creative submissions.

JKLucas does not offer to review, return, keep confidential, or pay for unsolicited material. Please do not send confidential information. Unsolicited material may be deleted without review or response.

Independently developed projects may contain similar ideas or themes. This policy does not grant JKLucas ownership of, or permission to copy, another person’s protected expression.
